5 Questions for Carole Ann Moleti

Carole Ann Moleti is one of my sisters in Broad Universe, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting, encouraging, honoring, and celebrating women writers and editors in science fiction, fantasy, horror and other speculative genres.

She was kind enough to interview me on her blog when Kill By Numbers came out, so I’m glad to be able to return the favor.

Carole Ann Moleti lives and works as a nurse-midwife in New York City, thus explaining her fascination with all things paranormal, urban fantasy, and space opera. Her nonfiction focuses on health care, politics, and women’s issues, but her first love is writing science fiction and fantasy, because walking through walls is less painful than running into them.

Carole’s Unfinished Business series — the Cape Cod paranormal romance novels Breakwater Beach, The Widow’s Walk, and Storm Watch — were published by Soulmate. Urban fantasies set in the world of Carole’s novels have been featured in Haunted: Ten Tales of Ghosts, Seers: Ten Tales of Clairvoyance, Beltane: Ten Tales of Witchcraft, and Bites: Ten Tales of Vampires.

Excerpts of her memoirs, ranging from sweet and sentimental to edgy and irreverent, have been published in a variety of literary venues. Carole was awarded the Oasis Journal award for best nonfiction in 2009. She has a piece in the acclaimed Shifts Anthology.

Storm Watch: Book Three in the Unfinished Business series

One last chance, their only choice.

Mike and Liz thought they’d gotten control of the specters haunting the Barrett Inn. But things get very complicated when they’re the ghosts from your past life. The Category Five hurricane bearing down on Cape Cod appears to be headed directly for them — or has it been spawned from inside them? Knowing it’s their last chance to end the hauntings, they face an impossible choice. Will they survive the storm?

Did something in the real world inspire Storm Watch?

Yes! As with most of my writing, inspiration and ideas come from real-life events. The entire Unfinished Business series grew out of my love for and familiarity with living near the ocean. Many scenes in Storm Watch, including the harrowing boat ride and the post hurricane landscape, really happened.

What is your favorite scene in the book?

My favorite scene in Storm Watch is when Sandra leads the group on their spirit journey. It ties together all the events in Breakwater Beach: Book One and The Widow’s Walk: Book Two as the series nears its conclusion. The concept of peace in the middle of a storm is explored on many different levels.

What was your writing process like as you wrote the book?

Writing Storm Watch began while I was sitting on Breakwater Beach in Brewster, Massachusetts at low tide, watching a fisherman patiently sitting in his beached boat waiting for the water to rise. Almost all the major scenes were dictated into my phone before or after a beach yoga class, during a long solitary walk, or while I was sitting alone on the beach in the early morning hours. It was like the inspiration poured out of the surroundings.

What was the best thing that happened during your promotion of the book?

I got a review that made it apparent that I’d accomplished what I set out to do with the entire Unfinished Business series. Plus, I get to spend a week in Brewster, Massachusetts (where the series is set) every summer for my book tour.

What do you have planned next?

I was deep into writing the second book in my urban fantasy series, Boulevard of Bad Spells and Broken Dreams. But while on vacation in California, I had a sudden inspiration to write a contemporary Western romance — and it’s almost done. It incorporates environmental and political issues, which happens to be drawing a lot of my time and attention away from writing. I guess reality is more compelling than fantasy at this time in my life.

  1. Excellent interview. Interesting that Ms. Moleti dictates a lot when she’s outside. I bet it does help when placing a story in a particular setting.
